Trombone lessons with Nate

Course of Study

From first notes to college auditions, Nate has taught trombone students of all levels and helped them achieve positive results. With an emphasis on developing strong fundamentals, he has over a decade of teaching experience and techniques to help students improve week to week. Nate works to create an encouraging, positive atmosphere for each of his students in the lesson, and works with each of them individually to develop a personalized method to improve based on their goals.

Lesson Format

Lessons are scheduled for once a week, and can be 30 minutes in length for younger students or 60 minutes, for students seeking more advanced instruction. During the lesson, Nate will work with students on assigned materials in order to asses progress and work with them to develop the tools they need to continually improve.

Each lesson will be tailored to the student’s needs, but typically will include: warm-ups and fundamentals, scales, melodic and technical assigned etudes and any material the student needs to work on for an upcoming event (i.e. school band music, region band/NYSSMA materials, etc.).

What is expected of students in between lessons?

In between scheduled lessons, individual practice is essential. Nate will choose materials for each student to work on in several areas to aid in the student’s development. Throughout the lesson process, individual work on these materials will be essential to each student’s growth.

It is expected that each student will arrive to weekly lessons punctually as prepared as possible. This includes bringing their working instrument, a pencil, and any required lesson materials.

A sample lesson assignment might include:

  • Arban’s Complete Method for Trombone: First Studies, Nr. 11 & 12; Studies for the Slur, Nr. 18 & 19, etc.

  • Rochut Melodious Etudes for Trombone: One etude per week

  • Kopprasch/Tyrell or similar technical etude: One etude per week.
